Everyone is familiar with at least one superhero.  In this workshop we shall look at a variety of different superheroes and we shall show how their ‘unbelievable’ powers have a basis supported by the laws of physics.  We shall include some simple demos with some hands-on science to explain what their powers can do. They will also do a variety of calculations to obtain, for example, the speed that Superman would need to jump over the Empire State Building. Topics will include, amongst others, conservation of energy, bouncing balls, magnetism and the motion of a pendulum.

PRIMARY: simple energy calculations, measurement of period of simple pendula.

SECONDARY: plus kinetic, potential and elastic energy; restitution law for bouncing balls.

SIXTH FORM: plus measurement of coefficient of restitution, circular motion.
