In this workshop we introduce the idea of big things and small things but realise we have to put our ideas in context, for instance, we are bigger than a mouse but a mouse is bigger than a drop of water. We then concentrate on big numbers by introducing powers of ten and how we can multiply them together by adding indices.
Using activities involving estimation we use these large numbers to build on our understanding of Fermi problems.
PRIMARY: practical exercises on estimation such as ‘How many ping-pong balls in a bucket?’. Powers of ten and laws of indices.
