Hypatia is probably the first female mathematician we know about. Not much is known about her early life but we do know she loved to work on mechanics and practical technology:

  1.  Planispheric astrolabe – measuring the altitudes of the stars and planets

  2.  Hydroscope – for viewing objects far below the surface of water

  3.  An apparatus for distilling water

  4.  Hydrometer – for determining the specific gravity of liquids

In this workshop we build and demonstrate an astrolabe and discover how to measure the density of liquids using simple apparatus.

PRIMARY: making and using a planispheric astrolabe; making and investigating liquids using a hydrometer.
