Whenever we ask anybody to name a mathematics theorem, in almost every case you get the answer "Pythagoras' Theorem". However, when we ask "What is Pythagoras' Theorem?" it is very rare that it is articulated correctly. In this workshop we look at the theorem and see that there is much more to it than is usually found in school.
PRIMARY: triangles, square numbers, Pythagorean triples, Pythagoras theorem by construction.
SECONDARY: triangles, Pythagoras theorem, four different proofs. History of the theorem, Mesopotamia, China, Babylonia. Sexagessimal arithmetic.
SIXTH FORM: plus generalisations. Cosine rule, Dijkistra’s proposition, Qorra’s theorem.
